Kids - 1, AJ - 0

AJ with our friends baby.
I found out something rather interesting about my husband on Saturday night. Something I think he was slyly and purposefully keeping from me. He has not ever watched or babysat kids on his own before (not including his little brothers when they were growing up). This means, that as an adult, AJ has never, not once, told a child no when they wanted something before.

Saturday night, a single soldier friend of ours had his first date in a long time. He happens to live in the same apartment complex as AJ & I, so we happily agreed to watch his two girls ages 7 and 9. He dropped them off at  7 pm and said that he was taking her to see Paranormal Activity 3. I thought to myself, "So he'll be by to pick them up around 11ish.."

Ah yes, but my dear clueless husband went out for a smoke with him before he left and told this single dad (SD) of two, "Don't worry if it's really late and they fall asleep, I'll send you a text and they can just stay here the night." This little tid-bit of information was something he failed to mention to me after he came back inside. If he had, I may have mentioned that we don't have milk or cereal, I may have mentioned that the girls were never told their dad wasn't coming back and so were unprepared to fall asleep at a strangers house (they have only been over once or twice for a few minutes with their dad), or I may have cautioned him about homesickness that kids that age can get. I also may have let him know that if we offered his kids to stay the night, that SD would be sure to let them, whether they were asleep at the end of his date or not. I may have been able to tell him all of these things, but I couldn't because I simply had no idea.

By 8 o'clock we had put in a kids movie (I have plenty) and set up to play a game of Jenga.. This is when I first had an incling the AJ had no idea what he was doing. AJ went into the kitchen and came out with two full-to-the-brim glasses of ice cold Koolaide for the girls to drink. Pure liquid sugar. Needless to say, 1 game of Jenga, one game of Life, 2 movies and 3 hours later there was no dad in sight and no sign of these girls even batting an eye to go to bed.

At this point, I was very tired and ready for bed myself. This was also when AJ remembered to tell me that he had told SD that the girls could stay the night if they were asleep when his date was over. I was a little upset at not being asked or told this information. AJ explained he expected SD at any moment since he had never texted to say the girls were sleeping. I rolled my eyes, stood up, and told him he could finish the movie with the girls, I was going to bed.

I woke up at a little after 1 am and rolled over, no AJ. So I got up and went to the living room. There was AJ, looking desperately tired as he began yet ANOTHER movie. There on the loveseat, was a bouncing, talking 7 year old girl, happy as a clam. I walked over and said, "No ma'am. It's time to go to bed. It's past 1 o'clock and we aren't watching any more movies. Lay down and curl up, it's time for sleep." I turned off the tv and movie and looked at AJ, who looked at the very sad looking 7 year old. She looked right back and started crying. AJ shot me a glare like I was the meanest woman in the whole world when... "I want my daddy!"

AJ immediately jumped up, got his cell phone, and called our SD (who was home by the way, his date had to work at 6:30 the next morning). The 7 year old cried tearfully to her dad about how she wanted to go home. I went back to bed. Furious at our SD and at my husband.

My nephew Jed & I.
Later, when AJ came to bed he told me he thought I was being mean to the little girl. I sat up and said, "AJ, when you are watching kids, your job is not to be their best friend or to entertain them all night. It is to be the adult and take care of them, and make the decisions they can't make themselves. What 7 year old wouldn't stay up all night watching movies, chatting happily with a willing adult? You have to say no. Of course she was going to cry and get upset, she wasn't getting her way anymore and she was exhausted!"

AJ thought about that for a moment and said, "I didn't even think about that. I was just thinking we were going to have fun and play some games, that they would fall asleep to the first movie, and then I could wake up early and make them breakfast and watch cartoons." He then admitted to me that he had never actually had to be the adult before. He had never had to say no or tell them what to do or not to do something. He had never had to correct bad behavior and deal with crying or yelling from an unappreciative child.

We talked for a while longer about having to be an adult to kids and them not knowing what is best. He hadn't even really thought about this type of thing before. It was a good learning experience for him, but I think he needs many more. Good thing when we get back to Idaho, I have niece and nephew who are primed and ready to give AJ some of the training he needs. This last Saturday was definitely a wake-up call for us both!

When was your wake up call with kids? Have you had one yet? Do you have a significant other that needs or needed a wake up call? I have been watching kids for so long that I can't remember when I first experienced mine. I do remember my most challenging cases, but I don't remember ever being surprised or phased by them. Kids throwing fits because they don't want what is best never bothered me, as far as I remember anyway. My poor husband though.. Oh dear... Is he really in for it...

** Blog Changes **

Kelly Stadium is going through some updates and changes, as you can see. Some cosmetic and others functional.

One big change is going to be the blog URL. As of TOMORROW, the blog URL will be:

http://kellystadium.blogspot.com

Please update any links accordingly. (This includes your blogger "follow" links.)

Also, tell me what you think of the changes!

Thanks a bunch!!!!

You can't save them all..

I have been told this my entire life. And although I understand what this statement means, I don't think I have ever internalized the words. What always comes to my mind is, "Yeah, but I can always save one more.."

This weekend AJ & I took our two pooches to the dog park for some play and socialization. While we were there, a woman with multiple dogs showed up. She was a foster home for dogs. If you haven't heard of this before, when an animal shelter gets over run they find people to care for the animals temporarily until they have the opportunity to find permanent homes for them. One particular foster dog caught my eye... a small Schnauzer named Sparky. An adorable and sweet little pooch, he was taken to the animal shelter by his previous owners for the simple reason of, "He poops too much." No joke.

This is a schnauzer.. just not Sparky.
After looking at my husband with pleading eyes, we brought him home with us. It's kind of a rent-to-own type of situation. We can keep him for a week and if things work out, he'll stay with us. If he doesn't fit in with our family dynamic, he will go back to his foster home. I really do know another dog is a bad idea, and we will probably relinquish him back to the foster home (very wonderful people) before its over. But it's so hard for me. The commercials where they ask for donations or help for abused anything KILL me! If it weren't for my husband we would be broke.

Way back, I wanted to be an international litigator for children's rights. Particularly child sex trafficking. But after a while I decided I wouldn't be able to handle it. You have to be able to develop a thick skin and also separate yourself somewhat, and I knew there would be no possibly way I could do that. I don't have the ability to detach myself, my mind and heart just don't work that way.

I've always been an idealist. I don't know if that will ever change about me. I believe that people truly can reach their dreams and experience greatness and happiness. I believe in stories like The Blind Side, Rudy, and The Pursuit of Happyness. I also believe in hard work and determination. And I truly, truly, truly believe that if each person cared just a little bit more, maybe not a lot, but a little bit, the world would be such a remarkably better place. I sincerely believe that apathy is what hurts the world the most. The fact that people know bad is there and for their own survival, develop an "oh well, what can I do?" attitude. I believe with my whole heart that if all everyone did was care, just care and nothing else, what an amazing place this planet could be.

Wisdom from "The Karate Kid"

*Source
I love the Karate Kid. I love all three of the originals and I love the remake with Jaden Smith. Unfortunately, I had not sat down and watched the movies all the way through for a very long time. Until that is, last night. Actually, I only watched the first two originals. They were on the family channel and I was immediately engrossed in them all over again. (Side question: Did anyone see Ralph Machio (Daniel-san) on Dancing With the Stars last season? Loved him!!)

Anyway, while watching last night I remembered how much I loved it. Here are some of my favorite quotes from the movie (in no particular order)...

*Source
Daniel: All right, so what are the rules here?
Miyagi: Don't know. First time you, first time me........

.... Daniel: Where am I, this ring over here?
Miyagi: Hai. Number three.
Daniel: What's that guy kneeling like that for?
Miyagi: Don't know.
Daniel: Don't you know anything you can tell me?
Miyagi: Hai. No get hit.

Daniel: Hey, what kind of belt do you have?
Miyagi: Canvas. JC Penney, $3.98. You like?
DanielNo, I meant...
Miyagi: In Okinawa, belt mean no need rope to hold up pants.

After Miyagi karate chops the tops off three beer bottles....
Daniel: How did you do that? How did you do that?
Miyagi: Don't know. First time.

Daniel: Hey - you ever get into fights when you were a kid?
Miyagi: Huh - plenty.
Daniel: Yeah, but it wasn't like the problem I have, right?
Miyagi: Why? Fighting fighting. Same same.
Daniel: Yeah, but you knew karate.

Miyagi: Someone always know more.

Miyagi: Because, Daniel-san, for person with no forgiveness in heart, living even worse punishment than death.

Daniel: How come every time I have a problem, you have work for me? Miyagi: Cosmic coincidence. (This is one of my favorites, and kept me giggling a while!)

There are so many, many more great ones. These are the main ones I remember from last night. One thing I have always thought though is The Karate Kid has the worst kiss! Every time I watch it I think, "That poor girl is getting her face sucked off!! I tried to find a good still image to show you but couldn't. Just take it from me when I say Daniel looks like he is channeling his inner Kirby while kissing her. Very scary.

I just love these old 80's movies. It brought me back to good times and good feelings. I need to do that more. What movies or things do that for you? That just make you breathe and smile? Right now, mine is The Karate Kid.

Sleep Deprived.

The last couple of weeks I have found it nearly impossible to get a good nights sleep. Not only does it take seemingly forever for me to fall asleep, once I do, I wake up several times throughout the night. Each time I wake up, I again have to wait forever to fall back to sleep. I've had the occasional problem falling asleep or waking up before but never like this. I'm trying to figure out the reasons. My mother was thinking maybe it was because I started back up on birth control recently? Does anyone know if hormonal changes and/or medication can affect your sleep?
Well, since I obviously have sleep on the brain, I found this and think it is very interesting. Particularly the parts that say your sleep pattern can predict your personality and that you only dream about faces you've seen before. It's crazy to me what kind of stuff is stuck in my subconscious that I know nothing about!!!

Happy Dreams!!

A Date & An Explanation

First off, this weekend was amazing. AJ is phenomenal. Saturday we woke up early and took the dogs to go play for a couple of hours. When we got home, I took a shower and AJ prepared out date day and boy did he pull through!
We did this:
*Source
It's called The Discovery Trail (obviously) and you go to each of these 6 historic locations around Lawton. As you go to each location, you get a stamp on your card and a memorabilia trinket to take home. We started our adventure at 12:30 but only had time to visit four locations (we got really into some of the spots!). We are planning on finishing it this weekend.
The locations we were able to make it to were:

This one was really awesome because we were able to visit the grave of Geronimo and Quanah Parker.

My favorite places for the day were the Mattie Beal home and the Fort Sill Landmark museum (we are going to go back there and look into more). The Mattie Beal home was taken care of by this 88 year old woman who was a hoot! The extravagant home has a small ball room on the top floor, built in 1907 it is a floating room! One side doesn't have floor support, its suspended from the ceiling. Our entire trip cost us 8$ and was a ton of fun.

Next, we went home and got all dressed up and went out to dinner. We went to the only Greek Restaurant in town, El Greco. It was our first experience there.
My review? Terrible. It was very overpriced and the food was premade. You could tell they had just reheated it from wherever they order it from. The menu was super small and the food wasn't authentic. I was pretty bummed out. The terrible meal cost us over 50$ with the tip. :(

Finally, we went to see Real Steel

I LOVED this movie! Loved, loved, loved it!! If you like action movies, you will enjoy this movie. I can't wait till it comes out in Blu-Ray! Sign me up!!!
Although, the ENTIRE movie, I couldn't get over how much the boy in it looks just like my cousin Adam! And coincidentally, the robot is called Atom, which added fan to that fire the whole movie.

Although we got a discount for the movie itself for AJ being active duty military, one bucket of popcorn, one large soda (both for AJ), and my fat free welches gummies cost almost 30$! I was FLOORED!

When we got home, we camped out in the living all night and watched Disney Halloween movies. Perfect ending to a perfect day. This day totally satisfied my irrational, non-sports loving, little dog toting, girlie side. ;)

Speaking of which, this past post regarding AJ & my conversation on Friday, seemed to strike a nerve with some people. They seemed to believe that I am a bossy, control freak, jerk, who is overbearing & rude to her husband, and they regard AJ like a meek doormat.
Let me assure you, neither could be farther from the truth, which is why I found the conversation so amusing and decided to share it with everyone. I never demand AJ, "clean the house" before I get home" or "pick up dinner" so I can be lazy. The entire conversation, between both AJ & I was one sarcastic joke to one another. Neither one of us took the conversation seriously (although AJ did plan an amazing day on Saturday, he was going to anyway because he was postponing date night till then anyway..). It was an amusing conversation, not a typical one. Please regard it in this way. I am not a demanding bitch and my husband is definitely not a doormat.

I hope you all have a very HAPPY HALLOWEEN! And look forward to your tales and pictures!
